Sound Files: Slow Fast
I've always liked this Irish reel a lot. It's very notey, and not a great contra tune. I don't find that it's necessarily well known at sessions, but often an old timer will recognize it. I learned it off of a Jean Carignan LP, although that was 15 years ago so I'm not sure how well what I play now would match up to the original.
If you aren't familiar with the Quebecois fiddler Jean Carignan, he has the most amazing bow technique I have ever heard or seen from any fiddler or violinist. He was well known for his version of Hangman's Reel, which you can check out here.
